Hospitality design specialist, Jones AD, has completed an extensive refurbishment of The Old Cock pub and rooms in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

The premises is the first to open as part of Charles Wells’ new managed house estate, Apostrophe Pubs.

The original premises comprised the pub plus five letting bedrooms, and a full refurbishment was required throughout. The pub was extended to increase the trading area, add an external space with covered seating area, and a further letting bedroom.

The rear extension features a contemporary glazed area and links existing barns to the main pub. What was a dark, gloomy area is now full of light thanks to large sliding doors and a glazed roof.

The new look lets customers enjoy a glimpse into the cellar, which has been opened up and framed with Crittall glazed screens, featuring a wine store. The kitchen is also on view, with an open pass giving views of the chefs at work.

The design details continue outside, with a fire pit set centrally into a high feature table - sure to be a popular spot to relax over dinner and drinks for much of the year. There’s plenty of outside space, including a covered area with heaters, and stylish booths to allow increased capacity whatever the weather.

An external TV means nobody has to miss out on amy major sporting events and the area is finished with planting to soften the space.

The Old Cock now includes six bedrooms, each individually designed and full of character. Dramatic dark teal walls on the staircase showcase a gallery of quirky artwork alongside an oversized brass and glass light fitting. The bedrooms are an inviting mix of comfort and luxury, including a rolltop bath in one, feature tiles and top quality sanitary ware.

“Abi and her team at Jones AD completed some stunning refurbs on a number of other Charles Wells sites, so they were the natural choice for a major project like The Old Cock," says Steve Wilkins, MD of Little Gems, Operating Partner for Apostrophe Pubs.

"We’re really thrilled with the results and it’s been a pleasure to work with them again. The new look is genuinely exciting and engaging, and we’re delighted to be launching on time, ready for what promises to be a great summer.”
