Founded in 2009, Johannesburg-based Fox Browne Creative is redefining hospitality design with an approach that seamlessly merges operations with aesthetics. Co-founders Debra Fox and Chris Browne told Vicky Doe about the studio’s desire to create spaces that are deeply rooted within the local environment and tell beautiful stories.

With their unique backgrounds and a shared vision, Debra Fox and Christopher Browne have created a studio that delivers effortless yet distinctive designs.

Debra’s roots as a hotelier significantly shapes her approach to design, allowing her to bridge the gap between operational needs and artistic execution. Prior to starting Fox Browne Creative, she served as the Chief Operating Officer for andBeyond, where she significantly expanded their portfolio of luxury lodges across Africa, India, and Latin America. “I’ve always believed that the experience of hospitality is enhanced by thoughtful design,” Debra explained. Her passion for creating spaces that invite extraordinary experiences and connection is reflected in every project the studio undertakes.

Chris’ journey began in the vibrant world of retail and merchandising, leading him to fall in love with crafting environments that tell an authentic story. Before co-founding Fox Browne Creative, he spent 15 years as the creative director for andBeyond, where he was responsible for the aesthetic of every guest touchpoint throughout the group. “My focus is on how every detail contributes to the overall narrative of a space,” Chris says. He strives to design environments that are not only visually interesting but also operationally efficient, ensuring that each guest’s experience is seamless and memorable.

A unique ethos of hospitality excellence

At the heart of Fox Browne Creative is a mission to deliver gracious and enlightened hospitality to both their clients and their team. The company’s ethos revolves around using excellent design to create unbroken chains of perfect moments for guests. They now specialise in creating luxury lodges, boutique hotels and resorts and private bush homes that are deeply connected to the environment and locality. As Chris said: “The more remote, the better!”

“We draw inspiration from the natural beauty and cultures of Africa,” Debra shared. “We aim to create spaces that are luxurious yet deeply connected to their surroundings.”

The result is a passionate, energised team that approaches each project with enthusiasm and a dash of humour, turning challenges into opportunities for creativity.

Distinctive services

What sets Fox Browne Creative apart is their comprehensive suite of services—architecture, interior design, and hospitality consulting—all offered under one roof. This integrated approach enables them to craft cohesive experiences from concept to completion.

“We focus on environments that are not only striking and inspiring but also exude a sense of place,” Chris explained. The team prioritises using natural materials and local craftsmanship to create timeless, authentic spaces that resonate with guests and hosts alike.

The process of design at Fox Browne Creative always begins with the guest and a focus on their experiences, whilst the architecture is always drive by the location’s characteristics. Debra explained: “The interior design takes it cue from the intersection between nature and culture – reflecting a deep sense of place. We start with creating an experiential masterplan ensuring that we have considered every touch point , we then we work closely with our clients to bring their vision to life, ensuring that every detail aligns with the overall narrative of the space. From initial sketches to detailed plans, we oversee every aspect of the project, ensuring that the final product is both beautiful and operationally seamless.”

Award-Winning Projects and Learning Experiences

Among the studio’s most notable projects is the andBeyond Tanzanian lodge circuit, recognised as a pioneering initiative in luxury eco-lodging that has set new industry standards. Other standout projects include the ARAMNESS GIR in India, where they developed the entire brand, and the andBeyond Punakha River Lodge in Bhutan – which also features in this issue.

However, every project brings its unique challenges—particularly in remote wilderness areas where logistical obstacles abound. “From floating our interiors across rivers to navigating monsoon seasons, and hyenas eating our sofas, we’ve tackled nearly every challenge imaginable,” Debra said.

“This work is fulfilling because it provides countless opportunities for learning, whether it’s about balancing local culture with luxury or simply navigating unexpected logistical hurdles,” Chris added.

Looking Forward

Debra and Chris are excited about several upcoming projects in Zanzibar, South Africa, and Zambia— Debra explained that these all offer unique opportunities to push the boundaries of luxury hospitality whilst remaining committed to sustainability and cultural integrity.

“Our business was founded on three main principles: making a difference in local communities, working with people we like, and having fun during the process,” she explained. Their dedication to positive impact through hospitality—be it through job creation, supporting local artisans, or promoting sustainable practices—remains at the forefront of their vision.

Through Fox Browne Creative, Debra and Chris are not just designing luxurious spaces; they are creating meaningful narratives that resonate with guests on a deeper level. As they continue to expand their reach and influence in hospitality design, their journey serves as an inspiring testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence.

In a world that constantly craves new experiences, Fox Browne Creative stands out as a beacon of luxury that not only indulges guests but also honours the rich tapestry of culture and environment. As they continue shaping the future of hospitality design, one thing remains clear: their story is just beginning.
