A question of quality: maximising guest wellness through optimised sleep

The hospitality industry is built on the experience it offers its customers, and the quality of their sleep is an integral part of this. Hypnos Contract Beds, makers of the most comfortable beds in the world and the largest provider of hospitality beds in the UK, understands the importance of sleep quality. Hypnos work in partnership with hospitality businesses, ensuing the delivery of a superior sleep experience to help improve the overall health and wellbeing of hotel guests.

Richard Naylor, Group Sustainable Development Director at Hypnos Contract Beds, comments: “In the hospitality industry, competition is fierce and any point of difference that a hotel can offer to attract guests needs to be seized upon to maximise occupancy and profitability. Providing the best quality sleep experience is a vital part of this and, while there are a range of factors that go into getting a good night’s sleep, the bed is at the heart of any guest room and a mattress is a pivotal part of the experience.

“Some guests can struggle to sleep in hotels due to its unfamiliar surroundings. Noise from neighbouring rooms, hallways and air conditioning systems can all contribute to a sub-optimal sleep experience, as well as the new feeling of the mattress, linen and pillows themselves. The change in light, temperature, and overall room ambience are also all contributing factors that should be addressed to ensure the optimum guest stay and experience.

“It’s also not possible to have a ‘one size fits all’ sleep solution as no two guests are the same, so we must make sure we offer a number of specifications within our mattress range to provide peak levels of comfort for hotel and hospitality guests.

“Underpinning all of this is sleep quality, which is critical and will form the essence of a guest’s stay and whether or not it left them feeling refreshed, influencing whether they return. So, it goes without saying that if a consumer is laying on a comfortable mattress, then their sleep will be less disturbed and ultimately, help them to achieve a better sleep experience.

“At Hypnos, a key priority for us is that we produce mattresses that not only aid the health and wellbeing of the hotel guest, but the planet, too. We want our customers to be comfortable so they can get a better quality of sleep, but we also have a huge commitment to sustainability, so the materials we use in our mattresses are extremely important. We don’t use foam, for example, as it retains too much heat which could cause the guest to toss and turn in the night and have an uncomfortable and clammy night’s rest. It also emits Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) for the lifetime of the mattress, which can become disruptive to sleep1.

“With that in mind, here at Hypnos we are continuously evolving and coming up with new innovations through R&D projects which focus on natural materials that are designed to be breathable and wick away moisture, such as wool. We only use natural products in our beds – in fact, we have seen increasing trend within hospitality for wool-based mattresses. Not only is it a time-honoured material that’s been used throughout our 100 years of making beds and produces more comfortable mattresses, but it also contributes to a circular economy as it can be recycled or put onto a compost heap to naturally biodegrade. In short, we develop natural sleep solutions to help create a healthy sleep environment by working with ethical partners such as The Woolkeepers® and Red Tractor’s assured farms to source completely traceable and certified British Wool.

“As part of our current R&D project, we are looking at new, natural fibres to use in our mattresses and are focusing on utilising quality, plant-based solutions that come from fruit. Offering natural comfort, these fibres come from waste in the food industry to, again, provide a circular economy, which in turn helps the environment.

“We believe in comfort with integrity and that health and wellbeing should always be at the heart of the overall guest experience, which sleep plays a crucial role in delivering. We want our customers to be comfortable and achieve the highest quality of sleep, and we do this by using carefully selected, non-toxic, sustainably sourced materials that we carefully combine to create robust, supremely comfortable, and ethical beds that will deliver a great night’s sleep for guests.”
