Skopos Fabrics – Outstanding Surface Print Design Award: Latitude

Skopos was extremely proud to be involved in the prestigious New Designers event last June, at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London. New Designers, the annual event, which champions the work of talented student artists across the UK, covers a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines, including ceramics, fashions, interior textiles, fine art and jewellery, and was a fabulous success in 2024. Universities across the land helped students prepare a showcase of their final year work in full glory, in-front of an audience of retailers, buyers, suppliers and business gurus. With the opportunity to sponsor an award, Skopos, was on the hunt for ‘New Designs’ that could potentially offer something completely different for their customer-base and form a feature design within their new concept design library, Skopos Studio. A challenging task, due to the high level of artistic talent on show! However, recognising 3 worthy ‘runners up, the Skopos team eventually managed to pinpoint a design which made a statement that fitted their brief. Robyn Jones, just completing her degree at Leeds Arts University, caught the judges’ eye with her depiction of topography and map making in a graphic print that Skopos have called ‘Latitude’. This unique design ticked the box for ‘Innovative Thinking, a Unique Handwriting/Style’ and the artist’s ‘Understanding of the Design Brief’: all of the criteria the judges were seeking.

After a visit to the Skopos mill, Robyn worked with the Skopos designers to prepare the printed design to go into a repeat and subsequently the Skopos design team created 4 stunning colourways perfect for commercial projects, seeking a quirky, contemporary solution. To order samples of this fantastic new design, visit our website.  Latitude translates brilliantly on our beautiful FR base-cloth options, ranging from simple linen and light-diffusing cloths through to more luxury velvets options.

The beauty of the Skopos Studio is that, as an ever-growing library, the design team are always working on the next ‘big thing’, to provide more ideas for up-coming projects, and inspiration for refurbishment schemes. Over 50 years of design experience shines through in the Studio binder, with ideas presented in categories including ‘Geometrics, Florals, Textures, Stripes and Checks. Each design is awarded equal status, rather than presenting a traditional, co-ordinating collection with a lead or hero design. Through this concept we want to provide our specifiers with the tools to determine how to bring things together, rather than suggest a scheme…after all, that’s what you do best!

Designs in Skopos Studio have been developed to work hand in hand with our beautiful accent collections and upholsteries for a cross-section of projects. All of our printed designs are offered on a vast choice of base-cloths including blackout fabrics, dimouts, velvets and impervious upholstery qualities. Base-cloth shade cards are available to demonstrate the full offer. If you require something unique, our Bespoke service can offer custom colour options for a minimum meterage.

With our own locally based print facility in Yorkshire, our relationship with print is now even stronger in 2025 than it has ever been over our 50 year history, allowing us to deliver outstanding with a low carbon footprint. Having achieved Carbon Neutral status again in 2024, knowing our Carbon footprint has also allowed us to effectively invest in future-proofing initiatives which can offset our emissions and give something back to our environment.
