A&K Sanctuary is set to open Samkani Camp on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni in late 2027, giving guests the rare opportunity to stay directly on the world’s largest salt flat. The camp is built entirely from Airstreams: five architect-designed Airstream suites, plus a sixth Airstream at its heart serving as the dining and lounge space. It offers the most elevated way yet to experience one of South America’s most otherworldly landscapes, with total privacy and comfort in a place defined by scale and silence.

The One Who Dreams
In Aymara, the indigenous language of Bolivia’s Altiplano, “Samkani” means “the one who dreams.” On the salar, nightfall brings a 360-degree view of the stars down to the horizon.
A Landscape Like Nowhere Else
The Salar de Uyuni spans some 12,000 square kilometers of salt flat, changing throughout the year from a cracked mosaic of hexagonal tiles to a vast mirror that reflects the sky. It is one of Bolivia’s most visited destinations, yet overnight accommodation directly on the salar remains rare. Guests at Samkani Camp are typically twenty to thirty kilometers from any other human presence, a degree of solitude few places can offer.
Airstream Suites, Built for the Landscape
The camp’s design draws on A&K’s experience developing low-impact mobile camps in Africa, adapted here for one of the most exposed environments in South America Each of the five suites is a self-sufficient Airstream. Its metal exterior echoes the surrounding salt and sky, so the suites recede quietly into the landscape rather than dominate it. Inside, the suites are appointed with blue Bolivian marble and chrome detailing, while the dining Airstream anchors the camp with its own bar. The result is a camp built to bring guests closer to the land, without asking them to give up the comforts of a five-star retreat.

Guided Access to the Salar
Each stay includes a private guide and driver, with more than thirty experiences available across the salar, including some offered exclusively to A&K Sanctuary guests. Highlights include visits to the salar’s hidden islands and volcanic caves, and stargazing beneath some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere, where the Milky Way is visible in exceptional detail. A&K’s Bolivian team with decades of local expertise leads every excursion, bringing depth of knowledge to a landscape that rewards it.
