Silentnight began in 1946 in the Yorkshire town of Skipton, where Tom and Joan Clarke started refurbishing mattresses under the name Clarke’s Mattresses. In 1951, Joan had a “brainwave worth millions” and renamed the business Silentnight—a name that would go on to become one of the most recognised bed brands in Europe.
