Mondrian London, South Bank

As the first ever Mondrian-branded boutique hotel outside the United States, Mondrian London will bring the energy of the original Hollywood hotel to the iconic Sea Containers building on London’s revitalised South Bank. Designed by Design Research Studio under the direction of British designer, Tom Dixon, Mondrian London brings the glamour of Anglo-American, transatlantic travel together with Tom’s unique industrial constructions to create a striking, and immensely unique 359-room hotel.

Located between the OXO”ˆTowers and Blackfriars bridge, Mondrian London at Sea Containers boasts a wealth of diverse culture on its doorstep, including the Tate Modern, Borough market and the Southbank Centre all within walking distance.

Combining riverside views, two exciting new bars, a restaurant and a bustling urban vibe, the hotel mirrors the feel of the local neighbourhood, while adding something entirely different to the mix.

A striking, soft chain sculpture standing next to a dramatic copper hull act as focal points for guests entering the hotel lobby, effortlessly highlighting the contrasting design forces. With the Golden Age of Transatlantic Ship Travel as a departure point and ocean liner cabins as his inspiration, Dixon has created fitted and well-thought-out rooms, incorporating metallic and brass throughout.

The bar, Dandelyan, will be headed up by cocktail expert Ryan Chetiyawardana (AKA Mr Lyan), will serve innovative cocktails and refined interpretations of the classics, taking inspiration from the botanical wilds of the British countryside and around the world.

Meanwhile, Mondrian London will also house an exclusive rooftop bar with breath-taking views across the city.

Continuing the theme of transatlantic travel, the hotel’s restaurant, Sea Containers, will be headed up by one of New York’s most exciting and dynamic chefs, Seamus Mullen, who has crafted a menu combining the best of Britain with America.

The restaurant’s open kitchen and visible wood-fired oven are key features of the eatery, alongside a standalone-seated dining bar in the middle of the room and a private dining room. During the warmer months, customers can enjoy the menu on the terrace along the banks of the River Thames.

Situated between Sea Containers Restaurant and Dandelyan Bar, ‘Den’ is an intimate lounge space ideal for taking tea, playing a game of backgammon or sharing a bottle of wine.

agua Bathhouse & Spa embraces the Hollywood glamour, renegade origins and bold nature of the aspirational Mondrian brand, and will  be filled with unique SPA Therapy experiences, treatments and an exciting array of products – most of which are new to the global spa arena.

Tom Dixon has designed six spacious treatment suites, which play on the theme of being submerged in a lucid landscape of underwater tranquillity. The curving walls and luminous pathways complement this maritime-inspired experience.

Located adjacent to agua Bathhouse & Spa, the Gym features state-of-the-art equipment suitable for all fitness levels. All Cardiovascular equipment from STARTRAC has been embedded with 15in touchscreens, integrated iPod connectivity, and a video and USB charging station, enabling users to display personal content while charging media devices.

A range of resistance equipment, free weights, rubber dumbbells and core strengthening accessories have been added to train every major muscle group.

Within the all-important guest rooms, Tom has fused cutting-edge design and functionality to create a mishmash of transatlantic 1920s liner and 1980s post-modernism.

All standard rooms feature queen beds, custom-designed dimmable lighting, bespoke furniture and striking marble bathrooms complete with MALIN+GOETZ amenities.

Unique design items include a drip wall painting handcrafted by Tom Dixon, as well as his signature wingback chair.

Some guests will be lucky enough to look out over the Thames from their river-view rooms – the positioning of the accommodation allowing them to feel as if they are floating on the river rather than alongside it.

In addition to over 20,000ft² of food, beverage and spa outlets at Mondrian London, the hotel will also feature six flexible spaces with over 5,500ft² of stylish and unique venues for meetings, groups and special events.

All facilities will provide state-of-the-art audio, video and telecommunications capabilities, and the hotel will also include seven fully-wired and linked junket rooms with terraces and river views for a variety of entertainment needs.

Perhaps the pièce de résistance, the hotel’s 56-seat private screening room adds an extra touch of glamour. Designed in deep purple tones, the state-of-the-art screening room features special acoustic wallcoverings, a 4k resolution screen and Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound.
