J Plus Hotel, Hong Kong

On the 10th anniversary of the former J Plus Boutique Hotel, yoo Studio has created a brand new look for this Hong Kong hotel. Building on the legacy of Philippe Starck’s original ground-breaking design – styled for fast living professionals and style-conscious travellers – the hotel now features a striking facade, and a vivid interior to match.

The yoo Studio team has certainly made the most of the building’s exterior, and has created a new-look facade – complete with a symbolic, Renaissance-style portrait – in order to reveal the buzzing street-level lobby.

The hotel’s new entrance on Irwin Street gives the structure greater prominence, aided by the stand-out yellow-tinted glass doors within the context of the black facade.

This theme is futhered through a series of suspended frames within the windows, which heighten the interplay between the lobby and the street outside.

These double-sided frames sandwich Lee Broom crystal-cut lights, which then refract the light through the coloured panes of the windows. Featured in yellow, orange and red, the windows are inscribed with traditional Chinese motifs such as coins, dragons and bamboo.

These vivid colours extend to the hotel’s interior, featuring clay tiles topped with vibrant graffiti rugs and classic furniture pieces upholstered in exotic Timorous Beasties fabric.

The comprehensive makeover includes the redesign of the hotel’s 32 luxurious studios and 24 stylish, spacious suites in bold, bright colour schemes.

“In a city so synonymous with change, this iconic address is redefined and refreshed for the future,” explains Matthew Dalby, design director of yoo Studio.

“While staying sympathetic to the original cutting-edge design, this refreshed styling continues our design house’s legacy of contemporary, imaginative and sophisticated creative to surprise and delight even the most jaded traveller.

“Our legacy is rejection of all things conventional. Original design enhances life. It’s our mantra for every hotel we develop, manage and design. Each by yoo hotel offers compelling individual states of design, service and location, designed by yoo Studio.”
