Pattern expert, ELEY KISHIMOTO, has collaborated with UK-based design practice Studio MacLean on the new Southerden Patisserie and Cafe in central London. The newly-opened store is situated at 72 Bermondsey Street, London, SE1 3UD.
This interior project is a result of a previous collaboration between the pair, when ELEY KISHIMOTO and Studio MacLean dressed Southerden’s first cake shop in Peckham with EK’s new wallpapers.
After the success of its first store, Southerden’s owner, Melanie Southerden, invited Jason MacLean of Studio MacLean and Mark Eley of ELEY KISHIMOTO to design and instigate the interior for her new move to Bermondsey Street.
The new Bermondsey Street store was complete at the end of January 2015, in time for its official opening in February 2015. The transformation from run-down hairdressers into a beautifully crafted patisserie store was significant; EK’s eye-popping graphics (from floor to ceiling in its Venice pattern), coupled with Studio MacLean’s technical lighting solution, have aligned with the rich heritage of Bermondsey Street, opposite the Fashion Textile Museum.
This particular SE London area also has a special meaning for the collaborators, as it was where EK’s first retail store – designed by Studio MacLean – was established in 2004, just around the corner in Snowsfields.
With the rise of prominence of the area including the opening of new restaurants and markets nearby, this has enhanced the spirit of the area. Southerden Patisserie and Cafe adds to this mix by offering a bespoke selection of delicacies which are daily and locally baked. Look out for the salted caramel doughnuts! All will be served with Monmouth Coffee, specialty teas and Matcha beverages.
