45 Park Lane, London, UK

45 Park Lane opened as a Dorchester Collection hotel in September 2011, and firmly established itself as a leader on the London luxury hotel scene.

Next month, the Dorchester Collection’s contemporary Mayfair hotel will celebrate its 10th anniversary with the launch of The Spa at 45 Park Lane. The 10,000ft² spa features Park Lane’s longest pool, at 20m, as well as a personal training room and spacious, state-of-the-art gym.

The wellness space is part of Mayfair Park Residences, the recently completed development delivered by ultra-prime developer Clivedale London – located next door to, and serviced by, 45 Park Lane. As part of their stay experience, guests of the hotel have access to full use of the facilities, which include separate sauna and steam rooms, a hydrotherapy pool and private changing and shower rooms.

Internationally renowned interior design practice, Jouin Manku, has drawn on historical references, blending them with custom-designed features to create sumptuous interior spaces that are organic, elegant and evocative.

The wellness space has been specifically created to bring a sense of the outside in, referencing artistic flora using traditional Roman-style mosaics from Venetian artisans. Natural timbers and light-coloured stone bring a sense of calm and tranquility, while timber-slatted ceilings have been integrated to create better acoustics within the pool, gym and relaxation lounge. The entire space has been generously arranged to maximise the sense of spaciousness.

“Jouin Manku has drawn on historical references, blending them with custom-designed features to create sumptuous interior spaces that are organic, elegant and evocative”

45 Park Lane’s art curator, Lily Ackerman, has selected works by American fine art photographer Jin-Woo Prensena and British sculptor Jill Berelowitz to adorn the space.

The relaxation lounge connected to the pool allows guests to unwind before or after a workout, spa treatment or swim. Within the lounge is an open fireplace with a menu of healthy dishes by 45 Park Lane’s executive chef, Jamie Shears.

The expansive gym features the latest Technogym equipment, with dedicated cardiovascular and strength areas.

Throughout the intimately sized hotel, luxurious and contemporary interiors by New York-based designer, Thierry Despont, provide a club-like feel, offering international guests a smart, central environment from which to enjoy London.

Each of the spacious 45 rooms and suites offers views of Hyde Park, as does a spectacular Penthouse Suite, with a wrap-around terrace offering panoramic views across London. A striking central staircase leads to a mezzanine featuring BAR 45, famous for its Negronis, a residents’ Library, and high-tech Media Room offering private dining.

“We stripped back the 1960s building to create a blank canvas from which we could construct a whole new concept,” explains Thierry. “Everything was custom designed, right down to the door handles. The Penthouse was created as an exclusive private apartment, a special place that really makes the most of the incredible views over London.

“Lighting was key, as the saying goes that 50% of an interior space is about the light, so I always like to make the most of natural light wherever possible. When it comes to artificial light, it’s all about making it seem as comfortable and welcoming as possible. At 45 Park Lane we filter and play with light in lots of ways, including the exterior ‘fins’ and the louvre blinds that separate the bar and restaurant.”

Bespoke lighting designer and manufacturer Dernier & Hamlyn was commissioned to create lighting as art in the hotel reception. Working in partnership with architects at Paul Davis and Partners, Dernier & Hamlyn overcame the significant challenges that producing this 5m-high, 1.5-tonne art installation entailed.

The spectacular lighting structure was assembled and installed in situ over two weeks by the team, and is a striking work of art, to which the eyes of visitors to the hotel are inevitably drawn.

Hyde Park Suite

Art deco in style, yet contemporary in attitude, these handsome rooms gleam with modern luxury. Clean lines and bold design add shape to buttery, soft fabrics. Sensual curves reflect in sparkling mirrored detail. These are rooms with a 1920’s heart, dipped in ultimate comfort, with a thoroughly modern twist.

The bathroom is glamorous and restful – the sleek, marble bathroom gleams with a glossy delight, with the who’s who of leading luxurious bathroom manufacturers all involved (Kohler, Gessi, Dornbract, Duravit and Villeroy & Boch, to name just a few).

CUT, London

Located on the ground floor of 45 Park Lane,

CUT’s London outpost was Wolfgang Puck’s first restaurant in Europe. Presenting a modern take on the classic American steak restaurant, CUT at 45 Park Lane is set in an elegant and comfortably contemporary atmosphere of moneyed glamour and laid-back sophistication.

Surrounded by wood panelling and curtaining, lit by low-level lamps and high chandeliers, curved leather banquettes help create an intimate feel for all diners.

45 Park Lane is described as “a vibrant, luxurious and welcoming club-like hotel that is the London home of an international crowd”.
