Situated just a short walk from the Colosseum and Termini Sation, the Esquilino neighbourhood is one of the oldest areas in the Italian capital. Generator Rome inhabits an elegant 20th century residence on Via Principe Amedeo, surrounded by cinematic streetscapes, picturesque squares, parks and an array of bars, cafés and pizzerias.
Drawing on the distinctive character of this diverse and historic neighbourhood for inspiration, as well as the Roman trade routes that have left their mark on the area, the DesignAgency team has created a vibrant, welcoming environment with a subtle ethnic flair.
As is typical of Generator properties, the lobby is big on impact. This bright, gallery-inspired space features polished concrete floors, white plaster walls and an inviting reception desk created from Venetian plaster. Cosy seating clusters are featured throughout for group check-ins and waiting guests, but also creating that draw for people to dwell in and enjoy this key communal space within the hostel.
The area is also programmed for live music and local art, including a custom mural by famous Italian street artist, Luca Maleonte. The design team sourced vintage oil paintings from local thrift shops to further emphasise the gallery feel to the space.
To the right of reception is an airy café, complete with large communal bluestone-topped tables. The white wall tiles, oak floors, distressed plaster walls and light bentwood furniture all contribute to a warm, inviting feel.
To the left of reception, meanwhile, is a vibrant bar that offers a complete contrast to the stark reception space. DesignAgency opted for riotous colour here, from the patterned floors and bottle green walls, to the palm-themed wallcovering and neon orange archways.
The sexy corner bistro features bi-folding doors that open out to an impressive view of the market across the street. Large, slow-turning wicker fans and relaxed eclectic furniture create a ‘throwback to Havana’, open-air industrial-style bar and lounge. Bistro tables on the sidewalk and large palms play host to a mojito menu and all-day food offerings.
The addition of a rooftop terrace this summer will add a retro garden patio in the middle of the city, boasting breathtaking views of Rome’s skyline, with vistas of an ancient Roman aqueduct and the glistening raw industrial steel of the Termini railway station.
