PSLab creates a sense of theatre at rooftop Beirut bar

Designer and manufacturer of luxury c products, PSLab, has recently completed the lighting scheme for a striking rooftop restaurant and lounge in Beirut, Lebanon.

Situated on the rooftop of a historical building in Beirut’s Central District, Capitole Restaurant and Lounge is a stylish destination for the city’s tourists and residents.

Initially built as a theatre, the building was later transformed into a cinema and offices, before opening in its present form. Interior designer, Adrian Perez, drew upon the venue’s theatrical DNA for the new scheme, creating several platforms and levels to define the bar and dining areas, and to build various ‘scenes’ throughout.

In response to the initial brief to create a casual atmosphere and multifunctional space, PSLab has worked closely with Adrian Perez and Capitole’s owners to create a fitting lighting scheme. The main challenges were the elongated shape of the rooftop, the relationship between the indoor and outdoor spaces and the restrictions exacted by the historical nature and location of the building.

A technical lighting approach was created using metal structures, wrapping and defining the terrace. The rods were used as a holding structure for dangling bougainvillea and support for speakers and clip-on directional projectors.

As a decorative layer, a total of 69 wall-mounted glass and powder-coated aluminium sconces were placed on the indoor and outdoor walls, forming playful lighting grids.

The wall appliqués were rated IP65 for outdoor use, and the glass dome-shaped heads made from borosilicate glass for security purposes. Rusted steel and powder-coated table lamps were designed and built to be integrated into the structure of both the indoor and outdoor concrete bars.
