Sanderson & St Martins Lane, London

With a renewed emphasis on comfort and simplicity, Morgans Hotel Group has redefined its iconic London hotels; Sanderson and St Martins Lane, with the unveiling of newly-redesigned guest rooms by interior designer Tim Andreas of Banjo Ad Inc.

The new look pays homage to the original ethos of both hotels by blurring the lines between baroque and minimalist, extravagance and simplicity. The new rooms epitomise high-concept design while enhancing the guest experience through comfort and functionality.

Tim Andreas has a rich history with Morgans Hotel Group, working on numerous projects for the company including Sky Bar at Mondrian Los Angeles and Shore Club South Beach, the Penthouse at Mondrian Los Angeles and the renovation of the guest rooms at Delano South Beach.

“This design of Sanderson’s rooms distills a decidedly English decorative approach to modern luxury and comfort,” says Tim Andreas. “St Martins Lane sets a tranquil stage for your London adventure.”

Sanderson’s redesigned rooms exude a feeling of residential comfort with custom additions like the new, built-in banquette offering an area in which to work, relax or dine. Tailor-made additions will be seen throughout the rooms including the Chin Chin chair (named after Tim Andreas’ dog) in the banquette area, while custom rugs and blackout shades further elevate the room’s aesthetic, featuring Tim’s hand-painted designs on each.

Thoughtful touches subtly complement each room, such as the light fixtures that create an illusion of a full moon when seen against the custom blackout shades.

The 150 redesigned guest rooms will also offer a more practical and convenient experience with elements like new side tables with integrated reading lights, additional USB charging stations near the bed, new flat screen smart TVs and a media hub with high-current USB charging, HDMI video and music-playing capabilities.

The rooms will introduce a new sense of modern, paying tribute to the baroque era. Tim’s designs are inspired by decorative motifs from the 17th century including decorative, plaster trophy designs, elaborate wood oak carvings and hand-blocked scenic wallpaper to reflect the serenity and comfort of an English Manor House. With minor updates to the bathroom design, it remains encased in a glowing floor-to-ceiling glass box wrapped in golden layers of sheer curtains.

The vibrant St Martins Lane is a 204-room urban resort situated in the heart of London’s theatre district. Juxtaposing its electrifying lobby scene, the rooms at the hotel offer a sensuous and luxurious sanctuary where guests can unwind. Expressing an experiential approach to minimalism, Tim uses the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows as a unique backdrop to low and simple furnishings to create the feeling that guests are floating over the city.

Linen drapery, polished aluminum, teardrop lighting fixtures and pale leopard print carpets soften the space, while the updated iconic interactive light feature allows guests to elevate their mood, selecting from a spectrum of colours with a custom-designed dial. The newly-painted room will enhance this lighting effect, which will also reflect off the newly dichroic laminated glass desk as well as the illuminated surface that holds the new flat-screen smart TV.

Continuing with the dream-like, whimsical feel, Tim installed a new mini-bar with mirrors for a see-through effect. Similar to Sanderson, St Martins Lane will also offer a more practical and convenient experience with elements like a new white leather chair that rotates 360° for optimal viewing of the entire room, bedside reading lights, additional USB charging stations near the bed, and media hub with high-current USB charging, HDMI video and music-playing capabilities.

As London icons and Morgans Hotel Group Originals, Sanderson and St Martins Lane are distinctive and daring, continuing to push the boundaries of what a hotel can be.
