A sustainable approach to guest room products

It’s not often that interior design trends collide with a seismic shift in consumer attitudes to create a perfect storm of the kind we’re currently experiencing around the use of natural materials, says Andy Piggin, Managing Director of Pro Foodservice Reps.

From David Attenborough’s war on single use plastic, to the continued growth and significance of biophilic design, hotels have a fantastic opportunity to tap into sustainable trends. And it can start with the guest room experience.

Biophilic design is the use of natural principles to create a human-centred approach. This increasingly popular architectural approach incorporates materials, textures, colours and patterns and can bring a range of health and wellbeing benefits, particularly in heavily urbanised areas. But this is about more than pot plants and living walls.

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword for hospitality venues, it should be central to the whole business. Almost nine in ten consumers want brands to help them become more environmentally friendly and ethical in their everyday life*, and millennials with increasing spending power are behind this shift; in fact, they are twice as likely to support brands with strong management of environmental and social issues.**

Designers are taking the opportunity to incorporate natural materials such as wood not only into the design of the room itself, but throughout the guest room via products such as ice buckets and tissue covers, even bowls, plates and trays.
