Cityscape Digital – a 3D creative studio specialist in virtual reality and visualisation – has recently unveiled a unique virtual reality installation available for public view at its studio in Old Street.
Based on recent successful commercial applications of virtual reality technology with brands such as Lendlease, Battersea Power Station and BSKYB, the installation creates the ability to view a range of projects in real-time and brings drawings and diagrams to life in digital form. With software provided by Epic Games, viewers are able to move around and examine every inch of the featured projects.
The three projects available to view include:
- The Blue Abyss – the world’s largest and deepest, multi-level, indoor aquatic research, training and development facility. Working with CEO John Vickers, the experience is currently being used for investor presentations
- Weston Williamson and Partners RIBA Constructing Communities entry – A sustainable hydroponic farming community along Greater London’s waterways, the virtual reality experience enables viewers to see floating allotments where Londoners can grow, buy and sell produce showcased through virtual reality headsets including the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift
- Lendlease Cambium residential development in Wimbledon – A real time experience for one of the five bed townhouses at Cambium designed by the award-winning international design practice Scott Brownrigg
“The virtual reality hub unveiled at The RIBA Constructing Communities launch demonstrates how virtual reality technology can revolutionise the way in which people can view and interact with design proposals,” comments Dan Harper, MD of Cityscape Digital.
“With over half of viewers enquiring about how they can apply this technology to their field, the demand for this type of technology is strong. Designs can be brought to life in an experiential way that stakeholders can really interact with. Compared to traditional text, models and diagrams, virtual reality helps to make plans more credible and understandable, and become more engaging as a prospect. We feel that this transition shows the potential of this evolving technology.”
Launched at the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) for the Constructing Communities event in conjunction with the London Festival of Architecture, the installation has been created to raise the profile of virtual reality as a key rendering technology for design. The installation attracted a large audience with over 200 attendees booking viewing slots in just three hours at it’s RIBA debut.
