Domes Noruz, Mykonos

Domes has opened its latest offering on the beautiful island of Mykonos – Domes Noruz. Vicky Lewis visited the exceptional property to explore the brand’s commitment to sustainability and spend time soaking in the glory of this stunning hotel.

From the outset, it is clear that Domes Noruz, Mykonos is a property which cultivates everything that has become synonymous with this growing brand: a calming neutral palette, an exceptional vantage point and a design steeped in serenity.

The 38-suite resort provides an oasis amidst the vibrant lifestyle of the island of Mykonos. The location is ideal, a mere 10-minute drive from the heart of the nightlife, yet beautifully resting amidst the rocky terrain, overlooking the sparkling coastline.

Guests who have previously experienced a Domes property will feel a sense of recognition before even stepping through the doors of this hotel, as the strength of the brand is vastly apparent from the entrance. Gentle archways, curved furniture and soft hues within the lobby welcome guests and instil an immediate sense of rest and relaxation. A few short steps then lead through to the outdoor lobby space which presents a breathtaking view across the Aegean Sea. At the heart of the hotel is the signature Domes restaurant, Topos, sitting adjacent to the incredibly inviting pool which whispers a request, just asking you to dip your toes in!

The public spaces in this hotel speak to the tranquillity the brand and designers are aiming to deliver here. The hotel’s own Soma Spa offers some peace amongst the noise of the island, where the design naturally lends itself to rest and recovery.

Exclusivity and privacy are the tone of the accommodation, with stunning suites offering terraces, sea views and private pools. Colour palettes reflect those of the exterior of the property – stoney tones, soft neutrals and natural hues. My suite boasted a balcony featuring a gloriously warm hot tub – the perfect spot for an afternoon of sun-worshipping. Domes describe the suites as ‘a world of uncompromising comfort, where style meets excess and each room is a sanctuary’, and this could not be closer to the truth. The level of luxury experienced here is a Domes masterpiece.

The bathrooms are created to be reminiscent of a spa, with beautiful marble sink tops and black accessories delivering a sharp and sleek design. Arches feature internally, as well as externally, offering a softer and more delicate aesthetic, and these are complemented with curved furnishings which extend from the softness of the public spaces. Suite lighting has been cleverly designed to ensure comfort, whatever time of day (or night) the guest may return to the room!

Domes NoruzUrban Soul Projects

The stunning design has been created by celebrated Greek architects, Urban Soul Projects, a studio who say that designing spaces such as this one is more than just the construction of a building: “It is the crafting of environments that harmonise with the lives of those who inhabit and use them. Our design philosophy centres around creating spaces that live and breathe with their users, ensuring that every corner of our projects resonates with the rhythm of daily life.

“We strive to forge meaningful connections between people and their surroundings, transforming mere structures into immersive experiences that engage the senses and evoke a sense of belonging. Our work transcends the superficial allure of spectacles, focusing instead on authenticity, functionality, and emotional resonance.”

Domes NoruzThe team explained that the location of Domes Noruz Mykonos offered much of the inspiration for the project: “This five- star hotel seamlessly incorporates Myconean forms, notably seen in the delicate claustra, which adorn its exterior. Light and shadows are carefully orchestrated, with large windows and openings filling communal and private spaces with natural light, creating depth and character.

“The earthy tones of the shell are combined with the sandy landscapes of Mykonos, creating an architectural narrative deeply rooted in the local character. The tones in both hard and soft materials contribute to creating a sense for the visitor of being in an environment of harmony and tranquillity, without abrupt changes. Overall, the architectural design combines Cycladic influences with minimalist interventions and modern materials, resulting in a contemporary interpretation of a new Greek aesthetic.”

Domes NoruzUrban Soul Projects worked their magic to create Domes Noruz Mykonos from a building that was on the verge of oblivion, and like a phoenix, this hotel has truly risen from the ashes of its previous life: “We are very proud to have transformed this property from a tired building complex to an attractive destination. Every room captures Aegean views, promoting relaxation and slow living. Communal areas encourage calmness, allowing the guest to savour the moment. Our infinity pool, designed to be shared and savoured, offers the perfect spot to unwind, take a deep breath, and fully immerse oneself in the essence of relaxation.”

The team worked to ensure a sustainable outcome at the hotel. Domes, itself, prides itself on its sustainable practice, and Urban Soul Projects worked alongside them to create a concept they have entitled ‘humble luxury’. Urban Soul Projects explained: “By respecting Cycladic simplicity in its original form, we avoided unnecessary additions. This approach not only preserved the authentic aesthetic but also promoted an eco-friendly and economically supportive design ethos.”

The team utilised local suppliers to reduce the impact of the build: “Our design achieved sustainability through multiple thoughtful practices. We collaborated with suppliers who provide certified materials, ensuring environmentally responsible sourcing. On-site deliveries were organised in large batches to minimise unnecessary transportation and reduce our carbon footprint. We prioritised the use of local materials, which were both sustainable and supported the local market.”

Domes NoruzGuest Experience

As with all Domes properties, the design of this hotel lies hand in hand with what it can offer guests. It has been created as a space to unwind on the island, whilst also being able to deliver everything that Mykonos has become known for. As part of the Haute Living Selection, the concept offers an ultra-luxurious experience.

This hotel meets all expectations as a Domes product and is a sexy and vibrant addition to the portfolio. The emphasis here is on luxury and style rather than excess and status – as the brand themselves say, “it’s a vibe”!
