On Friday, 12th June 2015, Luke Irwin London will host a sale at the Chelsea Old Town Hall on King’s Road to raise money for the victims of the recent earthquakes in Nepal.
250 rugs will be offered for up to 40% off, with proceeds going to Concern Worldwide. The charity and its partners are working urgently to distribute emergency shelter and relief items to the hardest hit districts of Nepal.
“I started this business 12 years ago and it all began in Kathmandu,” Luke comments. “I would not have learnt as much as I have, nor been so beguiled and enthralled by rug design if it had not been for the patience and education that I was given by our mills in Nepal.”
“Nepal is a unique country that combines profound simplicity with profound mysticism and sophistication. The people are gentle and beautiful and generous and welcoming. They have suffered enormously in the last 15 years through the assassination of their Royal family and the Maoist insurrection.
“We have a responsibility to help those less fortunate than ourselves in the best of times but in the worst of times that responsibility becomes a necessity. These are the worst of times for the people of Nepal. They do not have the manpower to rebuild their country as many of their men are all abroad building other people’s countries. They do not have the wealth nor the natural resources to be able to do this on their own.
“For the great gift that they gave me, I feel that I must give something back no matter how modest in the grand scheme of things. I have decided to channel everything we raise through Concern Worldwide as they did such incredible work in Haiti and they have promised to ring fence every penny we raise solely for use in Nepal.
“I hope that by selling our rugs at a large discount that we can tempt people into buying them and from those resources we will be giving considerable sums to Concern”.
