As part of the London Design Festival, Morgan hosted its RIO product launch alongside Studio INTEGRATE. Mehran Gharleghi from Studio INTEGRATE gave a presentation to an intrigued audience. He described how 3D printing was used to create the innovative RIO collection, which explores the relationship between the craft of yesterday and the craft of tomorrow.
This was achieved by combining traditional, timber craftsmanship with the latest 3D printing technology, used to form the polyamide curved lattice back of the RIO chair.
Rigorous study of materials and complex analysis techniques are part of the ethos at Studio INTEGRATE in order to push the boundaries of design and performance.
Mehran described other projects including last year’s exhibit at La Biennale in Venice, and the GeMo vase and Flux table – both of which were also on display at Morgan alongside the RIO chairs.
Using a mathematical algorithm, each set of six 3D printed chairs features a small variation that differentiates it from the others, as if it were carved by hand.
The result is a beautiful and comfortable chair that is available now and, as such, is ground-breaking within the commercial furniture market.
Available in three versions – upholstered back, timber back and 3D printed back – the new RIO collection can be viewed at Morgan’s showroom in Clerkenwell.
FX Drawing Competition in association with Ecophon. The company has also made a special thank you to Theresa Dowling and the FX Magazine team for giving it the opportunity to host the FX drawing competition. The exhibition of shortlisted entries attracted an audience from far and wide, including some of the artists – one of whom had travelled from Holland for the party.
In addition to the variety of drawings on display, Morgan’s double-height walls were also a talking point, with their mix of infographics, 3D objects and photography bringing technical information to life about the company and the design process.
