The Cottage in the Wood, Malvern unveils third phase of refurbishment

Boutique hotel The Cottage in the Wood in Malvern has finished the third phase of its refurbishment programme, resulting in a completed redesign of the entire hotel, as well as the addition of a new outdoor terrace, perfect for soaking up beguiling views of the Severn Valley.

19 rooms in the hotel’s Coach House, and a family room in the Main House, have been exquisitely transformed by Nelson Design to reflect the hotel’s elegance and history. Muted colours mirror the hotel’s peaceful surroundings, alongside injections of contemporary pink and burnt orange.

Unique furniture has been sourced from suppliers including Graham and Green, Swoon and Northern Lighting, mixing natural materials with rich velvets and striking black accents. The entrance lobby and public corridors are now finished with statement colours and bespoke herringbone carpets.

In addition to updating the design of the Coach House, the building leads the hotel’s sustainability credentials with environmentally friendly initiatives, saving energy usage by 60%.

The 25-seat all-season covered terrace utilises innovative energy-efficient black infrared heating to ensure the space is kept warm throughout the year.

Nick Davies, co-owner of The Cottage in the Wood, said: “The launch of the Coach House and terrace marks another successful milestone in our continued development of The Cottage in the Wood. We are extremely proud of the new design, providing an exemplary addition to our offering for our returning visitors and new guests. We have conducted the third stage as a highly sustainable construction project using eco-friendly materials to produce a healthy environment for our guests, with a low carbon footprint in the Malvern Hills.”

After purchasing The Cottage in the Wood in 2015, Nick and Julia began Phase I of the three phase refurbishment of the hotel. In April 2017, the redesigned 1919 Restaurant & Bar and renovated public spaces in the Main House were launched.

Phase II was completed in spring 2019, just as Nick & Julia secured £2.1m from the Cumberland Building Society to enable Phase III to be completed two years ahead of schedule.
