The Sloane Club announces plans for refurbishment

The Sloane Club has announced that a major refurbishment project is underway in its Lower Sloane Street premises in the heart of Chelsea. The extensive refurbishment has been inspired by the Club’s century-long history, its Chelsea location and a new ‘One Space, for the Whole Self’ ethos. The Sloane Club has collaborated with renowned interior design firm Russell Sage Studio for the renovation.

The Sloane Club has been a beacon of British tradition since it was founded in 1922, originally established as a welcoming residential community for women who served in the armed forces and adapting to members’ evolving needs during the century since. This next transformative endeavour not only reaffirms The Sloane Club’s commitment to contributing to the thriving neighbourhood of Chelsea – where investment is driving footfall and appeal – but also celebrates the Club’s history through fresh, curated interior design concepts.

The comprehensive renovation will transform the Club’s current facilities, from new restaurants and bars to an all-season roof terrace, spacious lounges and private event spaces. Plans also include a new fitness and wellness facility, a co-working space and the refurbishment of all 66 bedrooms and suites. Works are being delivered in stages; some areas of the Club will be unveiled in Winter 2024 and others in Spring 2025.

The Club eagerly anticipates the unveiling of this new chapter, at the start of its second century, one that promises to set a new standard for private members’ clubs in Chelsea and beyond. This is more than just an address or a building; it’s a Club that continues to be shaped by the progressive thinking of, and connections between, its members, all part of its living legacy.

Revamped interiors offering total luxury

Inspired by the Chelsea Mews, the Club’s bedrooms are a beautiful blend of comfort, function and inspiration. Mews houses, which began as service stables and compact accommodation for horses and their drivers, are part of the fabric of London living. The Sloane Club’s 56 bedrooms and 10 suites, designed by Russell Sage Studio, now honour the history of the mews house, full of character and charming details.

Under the direction of Russell Sage Studio, the interior design embodies the essence of timeless craftsmanship, paying homage to the Club’s origins and unique story with exquisite attention to detail, while framing it in a contemporary context. The Demob Bar, for example, features a tented ceiling, pendant lights, soft textures, low armchairs and timber shutters; this reflects the history of the Club by creating a 1920s ambience and a space ideal for ex-service women to ‘demobilise’. Sumptuous spaces flex to members’ needs, revealing and adapting throughout the day as required.

Holistic Wellness

An entirely new space at The Sloane Club is dedicated to the Whole Self, recognising the importance of wellness to our lives today, and the seamless integration of it into our lifestyles. In this wellness oasis, members can immerse themselves in an array of treatments, relaxing and rejuvenating both the body and mind.

The meticulously designed sanctuary on The Club’s lower level offers carefully selected gym equipment, perfect for independent workouts or personal training, complimentary classes in the Studio, a curated treatment programme and consultation rooms for sessions with private practitioners. The Club is partnering with leading brand partners, experts and practitioners/service providers across Chelsea and beyond; more information to follow.

Work

Adjacent to the first-floor Roof Terrace is The Study, a flexible space that offers a dedicated workspace, individual phone booths and meeting rooms to accommodate individual working, intimate meetings and larger events. Additionally, the Library Lounge on the ground floor offers a quiet and tranquil space, well suited for reading and relaxation.

Food & Beverage

Members and their guests will be able to enjoy three new restaurants and a bar, with private dining options too. Provenance and seasonality thrive, and all dishes and drinks celebrate the neighbourhood and its rich heritage.

Helena’s is an elegant yet laid back setting in which to enjoy a moment of solitude or connect with friends and fellow Members. The space is named after Princess Helena, the founder of the Ex-Service Women’s Club which later became The Sloane Club. The carefully curated all day menu at Helena’s features an array of beverages, from coffees to fresh juices, exquisite cocktails and wines alongside an assortment of sharing plates, refreshing salads and seasonally rotating specials. The concept of the Venus Room is inspired by the Venus Fountain in Sloane Square. The culinary offering in The Venus Room is sophisticated, classic and innovative, showcasing the best of land and sea and accompanied by an extensive wine list curated by the Club’s sommelier. Locally sourced and inspired by the seasons, each dish is prepared with attention to detail and served with genuine care. (Opening Spring 2025)

The Demob Bar is named after the act of being ‘demobbed’ after the end of two World Wars, in homage to the ex-servicewomen of The Sloane Club’s heritage; patrons will enjoy whisky sours, black truffle and parmesan biscuits and a nightcap among friends. (Opening Winter 2024)

The Roof Terrace, an urban oasis surrounded by Edwardian architecture and influenced by the famous Ranelagh Gardens will offer bold and exquisite Nikkei flavours, and a compelling fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. (Opening Spring 2025)

Private events can be held in rooms with designs imbued with the history of the Club: the ideal setting for intimate dinners, board meetings, client pitches and big celebrations.

Anna Jackson, General Manager of The Sloane Club, said: “The Sloane Club is an emblem of British heritage and values, alongside a select few London establishments that have endured through generations. Moments away from vibrant Sloane Square, the Club champions Chelsea and all that this neighbourhood has to offer our members, with a culture that focuses on integrating with the community. From showcasing local businesses to supporting community initiatives, we’re committed to being a cornerstone of growth and positivity in Chelsea, both inside and out.”

Neena Jivraj Stevenson, MD of The Sloane Club and Queensway Culture Officer, said: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to combine the Club’s significant history with a pioneering approach to how a community like ours, in the heart of London, can evolve; as people’s lifestyles evolve, so too do their needs and we have responded to this. We look forward to welcoming our current members, who we know well, and also plenty of new faces; we are excited to show you all how we are hugely improving our site. Following significant investment, members can belong to one space, with amazing facilities, that serves every need and here they can find a balance between work, play, rest and wellness. ”
