American Bar, London

Acclaimed design studio, Robert Angell Design International, has taken on the prestigious redesign of the American Bar at The Savoy.

As the first ever cocktail bar in London, the American Bar has a rich, colourful history – one that left Robert Angell Design International with no shortage of inspiration for its new design.

Retaining an air of classic 1930s elegance, the bar has been rejuvenated with some fresh new touches. The ceiling’s concave profile details shimmer delicately with subtle silver leaf layers, while the waxed linen added to the walls creates an undulation of reflected light around the bar.

Each wall is further adorned with photographs and drawings of the many famous guests who have frequented the bar over many years.

A curtain detail with silver wallcovering brings fresh drama and decadence to the Royal Circle bar, sweeping around the entrance to the circle. New, bespoke furniture brings an added sense of glamour, from the original cocktail-inspired tables featuring striking leather stitching, nickel trims and Macassar ebony show wood detailing, to the beautifully plush leather banquettes with chrome arm detailing and subtle mohair cushions.

Smooth leather with contrasting piping details have been added internally to ensure guests can enjoy complete comfort.

Each addition to the bar has been carefully measured by Robert Angell and his team to ensure that the precious heritage of the bar is retained, and enlivened. Of course, the immaculately dressed bartenders in their pristine white suits, the delicious cocktails served, and the live piano renditions will remain unchanged, continuing to command the bar’s distinguished reputation.

“The re-design of the American Bar serves to pay homage to the incredible lifetime’s dedication of the bar’s great and talented bartenders, who have over the past 126 years each brought a unique presence and personality to the bar,” affirms Robert Angell.

“The bar’s popularity is famous and so, together with The Savoy, we have extended the space with an additional room to allow even more guests to enjoy the legendary delights of the American bar and adding to its truly unique history.”
