Pioneering bathroom design – Kaldewei

As one of the leading premium bathroom brands in Europe, Germany-based Kaldewei prides itself on being a “pioneer and style icon”. The family-run company has continued to demonstrate an innovative design focus since its foundation in 1918, resulting in the production of elegant and durable bathroom solutions ideal for the contract market.

In 1934, Kaldewei started production of the first free-standing steel baths welded from several parts, and in 1956 its range was extended to include enamelled shower trays. A year later, the company produced the first bath to be seamlessly formed from a single steel panel.

A short while later, in 1958, the company started operating the world’s first-ever bath press line. Within a decade, Kaldewei baths in 3.5mm steel-enamel had overtaken the popularity of cast-iron bathtubs in Germany.

Kaldewei’s products are manufactured in its factory in Ahlen, Germany, which uses state-of-the-art technology to produce up to 8000 bath tubs and shower trays per day. In the world’s largest U-shaped tunnel furnaces, Kaldewei’s own enamel is combined with high-grade steel to provide steel-enamel with a thickness of 3.5mm. Offering a 30-year warranty, this material is scratch-, impact-, acid- and heat-resistant, and – thanks to its lack of grout – offers a hygienic and easy-to-clean alternative to tiled shower enclosures.

Kaldewei produces 300 designs in three categories: Avantgarde, Ambient and Advantage. The company’s design baths and enamelled shower surfaces are available in the classic sanitary colours, as well as in matt tones in its Co-ordinated Colours Collection. Colour-fast and non-fading, the hues complement current trend materials, such as wood and natural stone. Products can also be manufactured in other colour tones on request.

Each of Kaldewei’s designs is timeless and modern, meeting high standards of aesthetic design as well as of quality, functionality and durability. The company’s success has certainly not gone unnoticed – with around 90 coveted design awards to its name, Kaldewei ranks among the most highly-acclaimed bathroom manufacturers in the world.

Kaldewei products have been specified in some high-end and luxurious hotel bathrooms around the world. Offering 2560 rooms and suites, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore was designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who took inspiration from ancient cities to produce a venue reminiscent of a Greek temple. The bathrooms of the VIP suites include Kaldewei’s Mega Duo Oval whirlpool, which offers a soft, ergonomic shape to complement the ensemble of Asian and European features.

Ten balconies of luxury liner, Celebrity Solstice, offer an open-air wellness experience thanks to Kaldewei’s high-quality whirlpools, which are fitted with the Vivo Turbo whirl system. At 321m long and 37m wide, the ship offers 1430 cabins to accommodate approximately 2900 passengers, and features a golf course with real grass, a large theatre and 10 restaurants.

Europe’s first music hotel, the nhow Hotel in Berlin, features an interior that focuses on futuristic decor. New York-based interior designer, Karim Rashid, used free-standing Classic Duo Oval Wide baths from Kaldewei in unusual white, black and pink panelling for striking optical effects in 45 of the 304 rooms.

Extravagant, exclusive and elegant, Kaldewei’s baths, shower trays and enamelled floor shower panels blend industrial German heritage with modern bathroom culture, creating aesthetic and functional designs ideal for the contract market.
