Two highly innovative lighting collections designed by Michael Anastassiades for Flos, first showcased as prototypes during the London Design Festival, are now available to buy in the UK.
Trained at the Royal College of Art, Michael’s designs fall within the realms of industrial design, sculpture and decorative art. He is particularly renowned for his lighting products, which comprise 80% of his studio’s commissions. His collaboration with Flos has resulted in the IC Lights and String Lights, both echoing the muted style prevalent in Anastassiades’ other work.
The String Lights, which were recently shortlisted for the Design Museum’s 2014 Designs of the Year Awards, resemble telegraph wires, hanging in a variety of parallel arrangements to the wall. Hung with either black conical or spherical pendants, the lamps are fitted with LED light sources; the latter provides ambient lighting whilst using the cone provides a directional light. This versatile design allows for pendants to be freely placed in a desired location, removing the traditional restriction of having a centrally located light source within a room.
The IC Lights use the same minimalism as the String Lights, with opalescent spheres of light balancing on thin stems, finished in either brass or anthracite. These designs celebrate the source of the light with simple aesthetics and poetic shapes defined with clean cut line.
