Q&A: Carolyn Mitchell, Style Library Contract

Style Library Contract (SLC), the commercial arm of Walker Greenbank, brings together contract-specification products from some of the worlds’ best interior brands.

Home to Anthology, Harlequin, Morris & Co, Sanderson, Scion, Zoffany and FR One, SLC is a one-stop international resource for interior designers, architects and specifiers – Hospitality Interiors caught up with group contracts sales director Carolyn Mitchell to discover her take on the sector and what sets SLC apart.

As past chairman and a current member of the British Contract Furnishing Association (BCFA) board, Carolyn is passionate about commercial interiors. Having studied textile design at university, Carolyn started her career at Sanderson almost 30 years ago, so it was no surprise that in 2005 she was asked by Walker Greenbank to set up an international contracts division across its brands.

Why brand under SLC when you boast such strong individual brands?
Simply put, SLC is structured to provide solutions for our clients. We recognise the importance of our clients’ brand and know they come to us with the confidence that we can deliver any design style or specification. As a group we produce our own wallpapers and print fabric, so as well as having great standard designs, our vertical integration means we are also well placed to provide bespoke solutions.

Where do you operate?
Pretty much in all key commercial design centres globally. As well as showrooms in London, New York, Paris and Dubai, along with partnership showrooms in Moscow and Shenzhen, we have a strong international sales team.

Additionally, our fully-integrated website allows clients to search by brand, design style or specification across our Anthology, Harlequin, Morris & Co, Sanderson, Scion and Zoffany brands. In the UK, we also have exclusive distribution for the FR One brand, the industry leader in inherently fire-retardant fabrics.

But if clients want a bespoke solution, SLC is perfectly placed to help there too!

What’s new at SLC?
We are committed to developing the utmost in design-led, high-performance products. We continually invest in new inspirational designs to create commercially viable solutions for our contract clients. There is a huge emphasis placed by the company on providing interior designers with the tools to create beautiful, design-led schemes without in any way being prescriptive.

Anthology is a great example. Launched as a wallpaper brand in 2014, the first collection of contract-suitable fabrics was introduced in November 2015. The brand now encompasses four wallpaper books and six fabric books, all to a commercial specification, coloured and designed to appeal across commercial sectors.

What sets you apart?
Our passion and commitment. We value the trust our customers place in us, so we lead through design, supplying beautiful, high-specification products. Our success comes from doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. At SLC, we pride ourselves on our ability to design, manufacture and supply innovative, design-led fabric, wallpaper, trimmings and paint across contract sectors.
