Somerset wellness retreat embraces nature from the ground up

Nestled in the beautiful Somerset countryside, Combe Grove is a wellness centre which overlooks the ancient city of Bath. Crucial Trading’s natural sisal fibre floor covering was hand-picked to fuse bedroom comfort and character with the retreat’s pursuit of health and wellbeing and a deep sustainable ethos.

First choice for aesthetics and performance

Surrounded by 70 acres of mature woodland, Combe Grove wanted to create a calm and restful environment grounded in nature as it made the transition from a hotel to a wellness retreat. A sisal fibre carpet offered perfect synergy with the brief to create a scheme in tune with the centre’s natural surroundings.

Designer Caroline Adams chose 200m2 of Crucial Trading’s naturally elegant Sisal Malawi floor covering. Rustic yet contemporary, Malawi provided a rich depth of colour, setting off each beautiful bedroom with attractive underfoot comfort. The range of colour options gave design flexibility, meaning that Caroline could take a bespoke approach in varying the tone to fit with the overall design scheme for different rooms.

Malawi’s resilient sisal fibres and medium-gauge basket weave finish brought the added advantage of hard-wearing longevity – critical to a commercial setting. Known for combining character with hardiness, this contract-rated sisal is suitable for heavy-traffic corridors and bedrooms, making it a safe choice for areas subject to high footfall.

Sustainable and comfortable

Combe Grove’s environmental ethos extends to its approach to interior design, refurbishing rooms with upcycled furniture and selecting paints specifically for their low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions.

In keeping with this approach, sisal is both highly renewable and sustainable. For hundreds of years, sisal has been spun into mariners’ rope, weathering the stresses and harsh conditions brought about by a life at sea – so when crafted into a carpet, it’s no surprise it’s renowned for life-long durability. With a pile made up of organic strands as opposed to petroleum-based fibres found in synthetic carpets, natural floor coverings such as the Sisal Malawi range help to reduce the levels of VOCs in a space – supporting a healthier and happier indoor experience. Simple and elegant, Malawi floor coverings play an integral role in Combe Grove’s mission to create a relaxing and sustainable hub for rejuvenation.

Guests now enjoy the indoor air benefits of natural materials alongside the aesthetic character and feel of a unique sisal weave. The innate durability of the hardy fibre lends itself well to the movement throughout the space – dampening the sound of footsteps for the best night’s sleep and insulating the space from the ground below.

Crucial Trading are experts in natural floor coverings, using the finest organic materials to bring ideas to life. Feed your creativity in our inspiration library, showcasing dozens of the most unique designs, or get in touch with our team for a guiding hand in your project.
